“HUWAG ka na masyadong aasa,” begins her message to you on Facebook, “gusto ko malaman mo na ayaw ko na…” The cursor blinks a few times then disappears. The pointer emerges and then waits. You sit back and try to ignore the contents of the other sentences that follow. The first sentence takes you by surprise. Diving into the abyss, you read on.
“Nami-miss ko ang dating tayo,” her message continues, “pero ‘wag ka na masyadong aasa ha. Pero mamimiss talaga kita.” Your racing thoughts and her sharp subtext break the stillness of the first night on this very long weekend. The whispered humming of the CPU and electric fan takes over the deafening silence. “Huwag ka na masyadong aasa pa sa’kin kasi nagbago na’ko,” multiple knives drive through you.
“Ikaw pa rin ang una. Pero ‘wag ka na masyadong umasa. Mahal kita pero kailangan mo nang matutong tumayo sa sarili mong mga paa,” she pushes the sharp and cold metal deeper into your soul.
On this clear night, when your Internet connection is at its best, she breaks up with you while miles apart. Without any last embraces, neither last kisses nor even a glance. Three years you tried to build the “could have been perfect relationship” but it ended even before it really started.
As you log out, the written words echo as if she was in front of you few moments ago , “huwag ka nang umasa pa…”
The first time he came to me and asked what to do, I told him that she already gave the answer several times. “Huwag ka na masyadong umasa pa,” she said in different parts of the message. If one partner has given up, the only choice that the other has is to try to bring everything back. And when this too fails, there will be nothing else left to do but to close the curtain and end the chapter.
She gave up. She wanted freedom. Meeting someone else will just be a coincidence – so she said. The modern world as we made it, gave us this – not to be defeated by it but to be able to learn to live with it.
He logs in to his account again. He reopens the message. He starts typing his reply. “Hon, naaalala+mo pa+ba nung+unang beses+tayong+nagkita…” his private message continued with interrupted keyboard malfunctions every now and then.
Only when one gives up and the other pretends to be unaffected that a love story ends. If you love someone, hold on before you decide to let go.
